Contributed by Jim Duffy, PNC, Retired. Jim was on the Hermitage from October 1985 to September 1986 when he took 30 days of leave prior to transfer to the Fleet Reserve.

The Cruisebook states that the Hermitage had a crew of 18 officers and 330 enlisted. It had a Marine detachment of approximately 330 Marines. The well deck capacity was three LCU or nine LCM-8 or 50 AAV. The armament were two dual three-inch/50 calibre Mk-33 gun mounts, port and starboard CIWS (Close-In-Weapons Systems) and "Sea Wiz" Computer Controlled AA system. The propulsion system was two 600 psi boilers and two geared turbines. The ship had two propellers. The Hermitage was 510 feet (155.5 meters) long. The beam was 84 feet (25.6 meters). The draft was 19 feet (5.8 meters). The displacement was approximately 11,300 tons fully loaded. The speed was 22 knots. The aircraft capacity was helo only.
