Commentary from MM3 Bob Kemper (1971-1975)

In the picture titled “Cards” in the “1973 Photo’s By Smitty” there are a couple of fellow sailors that were not identified, until now.  The sailor to the right of Smitty is me, MM3 Robert (Bob) Kemper.  The one to the left, with the wild hair, is MM3 Mark Olin. ( I think I have Mark’s last name spelled correctly.)

A funny story about Mark.  We booked a tour of Rome, during the 73 – 74 Med cruise, and we were on a bus with probably 20 - 30 other sailors / tourists.  The tour guide was unimpressive so Mark took over the tour, literally.  He went to the head of the bus, grabbed the microphone, and proceeded to correct the tour guide about what we were seeing and continued as the guide for the remainder of the tour.   Apparently, Mark studied Latin, I believe 8 – 12 years, and knew Rome like the back of his hand.  He even knew what the remnants of the buildings / monuments were, in the ruins.  He put the tour guide to shame.  He did receive a hardy round of applause, from all of us tourists, after the tour ended.  One very intelligent guy!

One other note of interest, on the 73 – 74 Med cruise.  We stayed at a hotel not far from the Vatican.  Sailors being sailors, and not wanting to wait on anything, a bunch of us crowded into one of the hotel elevators, on the main floor.  We were stuffed in there like sardines.  Someone hit a floor button and the elevator door closed and then lurched, a little, and stopped.  The alarm rang out and we were stuck.  There was a pull chain, hanging from the top of one of the doors.  One of the guys started ratcheting the chain and the doors opened.  Then, just like in the movies, we spewed out of the elevator and ended up in a pile half in and half out of the elevator.  Management was not happy and threatened to evict us if we acted up again.  The thing we remember!

One final note, the website is great.  Thanks for doing a first rate job!
