1 March 68 - 1 March 69


1. 5 March - 16 April - HERMITAGE Undergoes main engine repairs at Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

2. 14 March - COMPHIBLANT, VICE ADMIRAL MUSTIN, presents awards for Vietnam service to several crew members. MM3 David Hillaire, receives a Bronze Star.

3. 3 April - COMPHIBGRU FOUR, REAR ADMIRAL WELCH, presents awards for Vietnam service to members of the crew. CAPTAIN H.S. MATHEWS receives Bronze Start with Combat "V".

4. 22 April - 3 May - An Amphibious Assault is made on Onslow Beach, North Carolina, by various elements of the Amphibious Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet. The Under Secretary of the Navy is on hand to view the exercise.

5. 22 May - CAPTAIN D.R. JEX, USN relieves CAPTAIN H.S.MATHEWS, JR. as the twelfth Commanding Officer of HERMITAGE.

6. 10 June - HERMITAGE deploys to the Caribbean as a member of CARIB-2-68.

7. 10 June - 24 June - HERMITAGE participates in Fleet Exercise "RACER RUN".

8. 10 June - 29 July -32 1st and 3rd class Midshipman embark for summer training cruise.

9. 3 July - 5 July - HERMITAGE is import Nassau, Bahamas for liberty. On the 4th of July a reception and buffet is held aboard the ship for 500 guests including the Governor and consul general.

10. 30 July - 2 August - Ship is in Oranjestad, St. Eustatius in preparation for operation "DORIA SALUTE". Beach surveys are conducted by UDT embarked aboard and reconnaissance teams map the higher ground.

11. 1 August - A reception for dignitaries of the island is held in the wardroom.

12. 20 August - COMPHIBLANT, VICE ADMIRAL HEINZ presents the Meritorious Unit Commendation to HERMITAGE for services in Vietnam.

13. 29 August - 8 September - The ship is inport in Panama for upkeep and training. Landing party, Riverine training is held in the jungle surrounding Fort Davis.

14. 8 October - 10 October - Ship is in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.

15. 14 October - 18 October. HERMITAGE visits Aruba.

16. 21 October - 29 October - Operation "DORIA SALUTE", an Amphibious Exercise with the Ready Group and Dutch Navy and Marines, culminates on the island of St. Eustatius with a successful landing.

17. 1 November - HERMITAGE is shifted from Amphibious Squadron 8 to Amphibious Squadron 10.

18. 18 November - 20 November - INSURV inspection is held aboard HERMITAGE prior to entering shipyard.

19. 27 December - HERMITAGE holds Dependent's Cruise while shifting from Norfolk to Little Creek.

20. 8 January - 13 January - HERMITAGE transports the General Electric "TEKTITE" habitat to St. John's Island. Four men will live 50 feet below the ocean's surface in the habitat for 60 days.

21. 13 January - 28 January - HERMITAGE transports 1 BAT> 10th Marines from Morehead City, N.C. to Vieques Island for "FIREX". Then she lifts Aircraft Crash Boat from Key West, Florida to Roosevelt Roads, P.R.

22. 29 January - 18 February - HERMITAGE participates in "FIREX - 69" with various amphibious and marine units.

23. 1 March - The ship prepares to go to Newport NEws for the fist three months of overhaul and then to Baltimore for drydocking.
